Evaluation ofNostocStrain ATCC 53789 as a Potential Source of Natural Pesticides

Abstract: The cyanobacterium Nostoc strain ATCC 53789, a known cryptophycin producer, was tested for its potential as a source of natural pesticides. The antibacterial, antifungal, insecticidal, nematocidal, and cytotoxic activities of methanolic extracts of the cyanobacterium were evaluated. Among the target organisms, nine fungi (Armillaria sp., Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. melonis, Penicillium expansum, Phytophthora cambivora, P. cinnamomi, Rhizoctonia solani, Rosellinia, sp., Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, and Verticillium … Show more

“…These compounds demonstrate a diverse range of biological activities and chemical structures, including novel cyclic and linear lipopeptides, fatty acids, alkaloids and other organic chemicals [4,23,26,27,46,47,49,67]. Many of these have potential pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, agricultural, and other applications [2,3,5,60].…”

“…Recently, F. oxysporum has also been reported as an emerging human pathogen, causing opportunistic mycoses 4 . Many strategies to control this fungal pathogen have been investigated 5,6 . Currently, the most effective method in preventing crops from fusarium wilt is to mix the seed with chemical fungicides.…”

“…Natural products have been isolated from a wide variety of taxa and tested for various biological activities. Among these taxa, cyanobacteria are regarded as good candidates for drug discovery, with applications in agriculture [3], industry [4] and especially, in pharmaceuticals [5]. Although cyanobacteria are still primarily viewed as an environmental nuisance or a source of toxins, hazardous to man and aquatic livestock, there are many potential benefits to research on chemicals produced by these organisms.…”
