Evaluation of increased arterial stiffness in pediatric patients with cystic fibrosis by augmentation index and pulse wave velocity analysis

Abstract: With the increase in life expectancy, cardiovascular complications of cystic fibrosis (CF) have come to the forefront. Increased arterial stiffness is a marker of increased cardiovascular risk. The aim of this study was to compare both pulse wave velocity (PWV) and augmentation index (Aix) measurements in children with CF and to compare them with healthy controls. We hypothesized that children with CF had increased arterial stiffness, although traditional risk factors for CVD were not observed. Forty‐four pati… Show more

“… 23 Cardiovascular studies in patients with CF reported a lower aortic distensibility and higher aortic stiffness index, in line with the CDACD study findings. 25 , 26 Arterial abnormalities in adolescents with CoA have also been reported. Children with CoA showed a higher carotid and femoral IMT and higher aortic stiffness.…”

“…Significant weight gain is seen in pwCF on modulating drug which should be aware of the problem of obesity. Increased risk for intestinal cancer and cardiovascular complications will ask to develop preventive screenings programs and early interventions when pwCF grows older in the near future [61,62,63].…”

“…The risk of CVD in pwCF is still considered low because of its historically low prevalence, which is likely related to decreased survival rates. However, recent studies demonstrated increased arterial stiffness, subclinical atherosclerosis, and gradual worsening of endothelial function in pwCF 134,135 . Several cases of myocardial infarction have been reported in pwCF with and without CFRD 136,137 …”

“…However, recent studies demonstrated increased arterial stiffness, subclinical atherosclerosis, and gradual worsening of endothelial function in pwCF. 134,135 Several cases of myocardial infarction have been reported in pwCF with and without CFRD. 136,137 Conventional evaluation of lipids in children and adults with CF have revealed changes associated with increased CVD risk, including a significantly lower concentration of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) and higher triglycerides compared with controls or population means.…”
