This systematic review aimed to evaluate the correlation between vitamin D levels and the rate of tooth movement, external apical root resorption, bone biomarker expression, and bone remodeling. Methods: Three databases (PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science) were systematically searched from inception until 14th March 2023 to identify studies investigating the correlation between orthodontic tooth movement and vitamin D in animals and humans. The quality assessment was made in accordance with the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist. Results: Overall, 519 records were identified, and 19 were selected for the qualitative synthesis. Eleven studies investigated the effect of local administration (injections in the periodontal ligament, to the gingiva distal to the teeth, or submucosae palatal area) and systemic administration (oral supplementation) of vitamin D on tooth movement, external apical root movement, pro-inflammatory cytokines, and bone remodeling factors. The remaining eight studies investigated the correlation between serum vitamin D levels and salivary vitamin D levels on bone turnover markers and tooth movement. Conclusions: The findings of this systematic review support that vitamin D3 local injections might increase the rate of tooth movement via the receptor activator of the nuclear factor-kB/osteoprotegerin axis. However, the non-uniform study designs and the different protocols and outcome methods make it challenging to draw reliable conclusions.

PurposeThis study investigated the association between the maxillary impacted canines’ position and the maxilla’s morphological features in an Iranian population based on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images.Material and methodsIn this cross-sectional descriptive-analytical study, 47 CBCT images of unilateral buccally impacted maxillary canines and 47 CBCT images of unilateral palatally impacted maxillary canines were examined. Several morphological variables were compared between the impacted and non-impacted sides, and between the buccal and palatal impaction types.ResultsGender and age were not significantly associated with the canine impaction type. The alveolar bone height at the impacted side was significantly greater in the buccally impacted group than in the palatally impacted group (p = 0.016). In a comparison of the impacted and non-impacted sides, all variables of alveolar bone thickness at depth of 2 mm, maxillary arch width, and palatal volume had significantly smaller values in the impacted side in both buccally and palatally impacted groups (p < 0.05). The alveolar bone was significantly thicker at the depth of 10 mm in the impacted side of the buccal group (p = 0.024). The maxillary arch perimeter was significantly smaller in the impacted side of the buccal group (p = 0.008). The palatal depth did not significantly differ between the groups.ConclusionsAmong the studied variables, the alveolar bone thickness showed contrary results at different depths. The palatal volume and maxillary arch width were significantly smaller on the impacted side in both buccal and palatal groups, and the arch perimeter showed the same results only in the buccal group.

Although ectopic eruption of the maxillary canine has a low prevalence, a late diagnosis can have serious consequences. A careful clinical examination, assisted with radiographic examination, ensures early diagnosis, facilitates planning, and minimizes possible adverse consequences. This study reports a case of ectopic eruption of the permanent maxillary canine, with complete root resorption of the central permanent incisor, the consequences of which caused functional, aesthetic, and psychological harms to the patient. The procedures used included canine ectopic remodeling of the ectopic canine in the central incisor and orthodontic correction, which treated the anomaly and rebuilt the patient’s self-esteem.
