Evaluation of Lignin Syringyl/Guaiacyl Ratio in Eucalyptus Camaldulensis across Three Diverse Sites Based on near Infrared Spectroscopic Calibration Modelling with Five Eucalyptus Species and its Impact on Kraft Pulp Yield

Abstract: Lignin composition [syringyl/guaiacyl (S/G) ratio] and cellulose content in wood have an important bearing on pulp yield. This paper deals with the development of a calibration model for S/G ratio using five Eucalyptus species from different sites by diffuse reflectance near infrared spectroscopy. The model was constructed with 120 samples covering an S/G ratio range from 1.8 to 3.6, determined by pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The calibration plot has an R 2 value of 0.825 which was validated… Show more

“…Thioacidolysis involves the solvolysis of the extractive-free material in dioxane/ethanediol (9/1) containing boron trifluoride etherate [43,44]. The reaction depolymerizes part of the lignin and the released monomers can be analyzed, e.g., by GC-MS allowing to estimate the amount and composition of uncondensed alkyl ether structures [43].…”

“…NIRS has been successfully applied to evaluate different features of lignocellulosic materials [73,74]. For instance, it was used to estimate Klason lignin content in E. camaldulensis and L. leucocephala wood [75], and lignin composition in maritime pine wood [76], and in E. camaldulensis and E. urophylla wood [44] by screening the H/G and S/G ratios, respectively.…”

“…O modelo matemático de lignina Klason apresentou alta correlação (Figura 2A) demonstrando seu potencial de utilização na predição de amostras desconhecidas. Altos valores de R ² , como bem mencionado por Ramadevi et al (2016), implicam em maior correlação com os valores da reta obtida, indicando maior ajuste entre os métodos laboratoriais e as análises em NIRS.…”

“…10 Eucalyptus wood lignin contains syringyl (S) and guaiacyl (G) monomers 11 and the higher syringyl to guaiacyl (S/G) ratio, the cheaper it is to remove lignin from the pulp to produce high quality fiber and paper. 11,12 Besides high-volume wood productivities, one of the main targets of eucalypt breeding programs is to increase the S/G ratio to reduce processing costs and enhance the quality of end-products. 13 Measuring wood properties in large numbers of individuals sampled in progeny and clonal trials along breeding programs is a laborious and expensive endeavor.…”
