Evaluation of Lipid Oxidative Stress Status in Sjögren Syndrome Patients

Abstract: Increase of the oxidative stress status in the conjunctiva of SS patients appears to have a role in the pathogenesis of dry eye disease. A close relationship may exist between reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, lipid peroxidation related membrane damage, and inflammatory processes in dry eye.

“…40,57,58 In vivo lipid oxidative injury has been observed in DED and Sjögren's syndrome patients. 59,60 In vitro studies further revealed that lipid and mitochondrial oxidative damage causes inflammation in HCE cells. 39,61 As mentioned above, various anti-inflammatory drugs, such as topical steroids and cyclosporine, have been widely used to treat DED, and studies have shown that anti-inflammatory treatment has a beneficial effect on tear secretion, tear film stability, and ocular surface integrity.…”

“…For example, oxidative stress-induced lipid peroxidation was increased on the conjunctivae of Sjogren's patients as assessed by detection of hexanoyl-lysine (HEL) and 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal (4HNE) protein adducts. 54 Furthermore, corneal epithelial damage may upregulate nerve growth factor (NGF) and decrease calcitonin generelated peptide (CGRP) levels. [55][56][57] Finally, MMP-9 levels have been shown to increase in the tears of dry eye patients.…”

“…Tear antioxidants help to scavenge reactive oxygen species in the tears secondary to exogenous factors such as UV exposure and pollution. Oxidative damage may also play a role in dry eye pathogenesis (Wakamatsu et al, 2013).…”
