Evaluation of Local Control, Survival and Pattern of Failure with Radiotherapy in Cancer of the Tongue

Abstract: 105 patients with cancer of the tongue were treated with radical radiotherapy in 1982 at the Regional Cancer Centre, Trivandrum, India. The overall local control rate was 55% and the 3-year actuarial disease-free survival was 36% with radiotherapy. The analysis revealed a close correlation between stage of the disease and local control as well as survival. 45% of the patients with clinically positive cervical nodes had their disease controlled by radiotherapy. Since the best results were obtained with early di… Show more

“…This rising incidence is also reflected in the population under 40 years of age who, it is estimated, make up 16e28% of all oral cancer patients seen at various institutions in India. 21 This shows an alarming rise in the incidence rate in younger people. 19 We retrospectively analyzed the pathology of lesions from young patients with OSCC and compared them to lesions from older patients in order to ascertain if there was any important exclusivity in the young population.…”

“…Only through organized efforts aimed at improving awareness, health-related behaviour, professional awareness and re-orientation, and appropriate referral will down-staging of common cancers be achieved. The proportion of radical treatment, and survival rates, would also reflect to a greater extent the clinical stages of presentation of these al., 1988;Padmanabhan et al, 1988Padmanabhan et al, , 1990. The 5-year survival rates have been found to be 46% for cancer of the larynx, 49% for cancer of the uterine cervix and 40% for breast cancer.…”

“…Excluding the smallest and the earliest tumors ( = T I ) , the regional lymph nodes should be included in surgery and radiotherapy (35,39,45,52,62,63). If radiotherapy is delivered postoperatively solely because of lymph node metastases, the primary tumor area should still be included in the target volume…”
