Evaluation of Magnetostriction of the Single-Variant Ni-Mn-Ga Martensite

Abstract: Abstract. The temperature dependence of ordinary magnetostriction of the axially compressed Ni-Mn-Ga alloy with the low values of shear elastic modulus C'(T) ~ 1 -10 GPa has been evaluated theoretically in the framework of Landau theory. The computations showed that the compression with 50 MPa stress reduces the ordinary magnetostriction by factor 3 at room temperature. Nevertheless, the magnetostriction of compressed alloy exceeds the value of 10 -4 in the whole temperature range of martensitic phase stabilit… Show more

“…The values ρ ≈ 8 g/cm 3 and δ 1 ≈ 10 7 erg/cm 3 are inherent to the quasistoichiometric Ni-Mn-Ga alloys [8,13,14,15]. The spin-exchange parameter can be roughly estimated as α ≈ T C l 2 k B (|µ B |M 0 ) −1 , where T C = 360 K is the Curie temperature, l = 0.41 × 10 −8 cm is the distance between the magnetic atoms, k B and µ B are the Boltzmann constant and the Bohr magneton, respectively.…”

“…The ordinary magnetostriction of the Ni-Mn-Ga alloys has been studied in both experimental [11,12] and theoretical ways [13]. The drastic increase of the magnetostriction was observed, while the temperature of a cubic crystal approaches the MT temperature [10].…”
