Evaluation of mechanical, thermal and water absorption behaviors of Polyalthia longifolia seed reinforced vinyl ester composites

Abstract: This study presents a novel utilization of biomass solid waste, named Polyalthia longifolia (Mast tree) seed as a reinforcement in a composite, using a compression molding technique. An attempt was made to reinforce vinyl ester matrix (VE) with Polyalthia longifolia seed filler (PLSF), ranging from 5 to 50 wt% loadings. Mechanical properties of the fabricated Polyalthia longifolia seed filler/vinyl ester (PLSF-VE) composite samples were tested and analyzed. The results showed that the PLSF-VE composite exhibite… Show more

“…The harder the final product is obtained as a result of the increased filler content. The fillers in the matrix provide resistance, which enhances hardness [ 26 ]. Another component that improves the composite’s properties is the bonding between the matrix and filler [ 27 ].…”

“…The reinforcement materials used for composite fabrication were roselle fiber yarn mat and Indian mallow. The manufacturing method used was compression molding (SANTEC Hydraulic Compression Moulding machine) with weight capacity of 300 kg [42][43][44]. The woven Indian mallow fiber yarn mats layers, both single and double, were placed in a 200 mm × 200 mm × 3 mm mold in both transverse and longitudinal orientations.…”
