Evaluation of N-P-K-Ca-Mg dynamics in plum (Prunus salicina Lindl.) var. Horvin under nursery conditions

Abstract: Temperate fruit trees are a vital part of the economy of the Cundiboyacense highlands in Colombia. The nursery stage is important because it guarantees development at the final grow site. Little is known about the fertilization processes and nutritional dynamics of deciduous fruit trees in the early stages. This research aimed to evaluate the dynamics of N-P-K-Ca and Mg, along with SPAD units, in grafted plum (Prunus salicina) var. Horvin plants under the conditions of tropical highlands, which were evaluated … Show more

“…Growth rate relates the growth of lateral shoots per unit of time (Hunt, 1990). This variable is significantly lower in P-deficient plants that can be related to the rapid decrease in photosynthetic rates (Orduz-Ríos et al, 2020), because many intermediate stages for carbon fixation involve sugar phosphates (Maathuis, 2009). Hurtado et al (2019) observe slow shoot growth in juvenile avocado plants with -P deficiency, while Dussán et al (2016) record a serious affectation of the foliar area in plants with -P deficiency in guava.…”

“…Compared to other species of the genus Prunus, P. salicina shows interesting similarities and differences in phylogenetic evolution with P. armeniaca and P. mume (Xue et al, 2019). In the Japanese plum trees 'Horvin' grown in tropical highlands, the relative chlorophyll content in SPAD units had values of 23.3 and 47.7 in young and fully developed leaves, respectively (Orduz-Ríos et al, 2020).…”

“…In seedlings of Japanese plum var. 'Horvin' at the nursery stage of growth, the concentrations of foliar N were highest, followed by K, and finally P and Mg (Orduz-Ríos et al, 2020). Likewise, the plum tree is one of the deciduous fruit species with the lowest demand for nitrogen (N), however, Japanese plum trees require a greater amount of N than European plum trees .…”

“…Nutrient uptake curves allow inferring the amount and period of greatest demand for each evaluated nutrient, thus it is possible to establish a balance between nutrient supply and plant demand, in order to obtain high yields with fruits of excellent quality (Brunetto et al, 2016;Stefanello et al, 2020). The nutrient concentrations in the first-stage of fruit growth require a nutritional balance to guarantee succesful development and establishment at the definitive growing site (Orduz-Ríos et al, 2020).…”
