The incidence of many human disorders, such as cancer, oxidative stress, diabetes mellitus, and inflammatory diseases, has been mountingly increased because of many factors, including environmental pollution, static lifestyle, and unhealthy feeding. In an attempt to explore a scaffold with multiple biomedical activities, four natural phenolic acids, namely vanillic-, protocatechuic-, ferulic-, and caffeic-acid, were selected to construct twelve derived coumarins. The skeletal formulas of the semi-synthesized coumarins were confirmed by analyzing their spectra afforded via various spectrophotometers. The biomedical characteristics of these coumarins were investigated and included their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, and anticancer activities. The antioxidant activity was quantified by monitoring the potential of these coumarins to reduce DPPH and hydroxyl oxidants and provide an electron in the redox reaction. The anti-inflammatory activity was detected by specifying the inhibitory and selectivity of these coumarins on two COX isozymes. The antidiabetic activity was determined by examining the capacity of these coumarins to suppress two enzymes involved in blood glucose regulation. The anticancer activity and cytotoxicity were examined via MTT-based methodology versus four cancer cell lines and one normal cell line. The findings revealed that the semi-synthesized coumarins exhibited potent antioxidant and anticancer activities with low-induced cytotoxicity. Also, these coumarins showed modest antidiabetic potential and inhibitory effects versus the COX isozymes, with some selectivity toward the inhibition of COX-2. The authors concluded that these coumarins, specifically YC11, provide a valid structural template for synthesizing multi-functional agents effective in treating health situations in which oxidative stress, inflammation, diabetes, and cancer are combined.

In recent years, the use of waste materials from agricultural sources has attracted interest as a research field. Several kinds of waste particles have been studied as additives for asphalt modification, and good results in terms of rheological and physical properties have been discussed in recent literature. In the present work, two types of seed shell particles were evaluated as asphalt modifiers. The shells of Jatropha curcas and pistachio are considered waste materials with no further industrial applications; therefore, in this study, they were incorporated into asphalt at different concentrations in order to evaluate their effect on the binder’s properties. Modified asphalt mixtures were prepared through the hot mix method, and the physical, rheological, and thermal properties of the modified samples were measured and compared to those of the unmodified binder. According to the results of softening point, viscosity, and rheological characterization, the particles obtained from Jatropha curcas and pistachio shells can be used as efficient additives for asphalt modification. Pistachio shell particles act as an asphalt modifier, while Jatropha curcas behaves more like a filler agent since using it at high concentrations causes an inverse effect on the modified performance and properties of the asphalt. Finally, the results obtained showed that both shell particles were useful for improving the binder’s resistance to rutting and permanent deformations, compared to the pure asphalt’s original behavior.

Coumarin chemical nucleus is a gift awarded from nature to humanity. The multifarious derivatives and the broad range of their bio-medicinal potentials are the basis for this description. In the last several decades, though numerous coumarin-based products have been primarily separated from their biological origins, the laboratory synthesis of the coumarins is developing. Various synthetic trails namely Knoevenagel, Claisen, Perkin, Pechmann, Wittig, and Reformatsky have been reported. Several advanced innovations have been created to maximize yield, minimize overall reaction time, avoid side products, and make synthetic reactions environmentally friendly. These include the employment of ultrasonic, microwave, and solventfree conditions. This brief review focuses on the classic methods for synthesizing coumarins, and the advantages derived from the use of creative catalytic tools.
