Evaluation of nootropic activity of Limonia acidissima against scopolamineinduced amnesia on rats

Abstract: Introduction:The present study was aimed to evaluate nootropic activity of Limonia acidissima on rats. Materials and Methods:Methanolic extract of Limonia acidissima was used to evaluate nootropic activity, piracetam (200 mg/kg, i.p.) was used as standard and scopolamine (1 mg/kg, i.p.) was used to induce amnesia. Effect of drugs on learning and memory of rats was evaluated by using Y-maze task and elevated plus maze on scopolamine induced amnesia models.Locomotor activity was performed using actophotometer. A… Show more

“…Previously, actophotometer has been deployed in the evaluation of the locomotion-related CNS depressant potential of medicinal plant extracts [59,60]. Using this locomotory activity index our findings indicate aqueous ethanol extracts of Tapinanthus globiferus leaf and Mucuna pruriens seed (MPS) extracts even high oral doses do not exert any significant CNS depressant or stimulant impact in mice.…”

“…These rats were subjected to stress by forced swim prior to the maze experiment to increase their stress levels. This was done to determine the effect of stress on the learning and memory retention capacity on the rats [16]. The result shown below was obtained.…”

“…Further, there was a significant improvement in the time spent in the novel arm. The total arm entries in the Y‐maze also help in the evaluation of locomotor activity, which is highly reduced in AD patients with disease progression 50 . Treatment with test compounds and DNP induced significant improvement in the total arm entries.…”
