Evaluation of nutritional status in children with amblyopia

Abstract: We aimed to compare the body mass index and vitamin and mineral status of children with and without amblyopia. Methods: Amblyopic children aged between 5 and 18 years (n=46) and age-matched control children (n=32) were evaluated in terms of anthropometric parameters, including height, weight, body mass index and demographic features. Serum vitamin B 12 and folate were measured using an Advia Centaur XP (Siemens, Ireland) biochemistry analyzer. We evaluated the inorganic mineral elements from hair samples with … Show more

“…The decreased vascular density suggests a diminished coverage of blood vessels within the retina, potentially compromising the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to retinal tissues. Subasi et al 27 found that amblyopic children suffered from a deficiency of phosphorus, selenium, molybdenum, iodine, chromium, boron, beryllium, folate, and vitamin B12. On top of such nutritional deficiency, decreased contrast sensitivity and impaired visual acuity may exacerbate the visual deficits observed in amblyopia.…”

“…A partir dos anos de 1960, Hubel e Weisel estudaram a neurofisiologia da ambliopia, com concepções sobre a perda considerável de neurônios binoculares e alterações da atividade neuronal da dominância ocular do olho não infectado (NOGUEIRA; FERREIRA; PINTO, 2013;SUBASI et al, 2019).…”
