Evaluation of NVIDIA Xavier NX Platform for Real-Time Image Processing for Plasma Diagnostics

Abstract: Machine protection is a core task of real-time image diagnostics aiming for steady-state operation in nuclear fusion devices. The paper evaluates the applicability of the newest low-power NVIDIA Jetson Xavier NX platform for image plasma diagnostics. This embedded NVIDIA Tegra System-on-a-Chip (SoC) integrates a Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) and Central Processing Unit (CPU) on a single chip. The hardware differences and features compared to the previous NVIDIA Jetson TX2 are signified. Implemented algorithms… Show more

“…Additionally, it has a low power consumption and compact dimensions. Although slightly more expensive than the Intel NUC 1185G7, the NVidia Jetson Xavier Nx is especially suitable for systems using Artificial Intelligence, as well as for robotic systems and equipment with high-resolution sensors [ 20 ]. The NVidia Jetson Xavier Nx will serve as the central interface for all sensor devices, including GNSS, IMU, LIDAR, and cameras, and for the microcontroller responsible for controlling the machine’s actions.…”

“…The principle of operation of the vision system on the measuring platform for quality testing of airport lamps is shown in Figure 2. Processing video sequences requires the use of computing units of different power [7,8], depending on the selected algorithm and the operations performed on the image [5,9]. In mobile applications, it is important to find a compromise between the compact size of the system, power consumption, and computer performance.…”

“…Only a few papers have explored the use of the NVIDIA Jetson Xavier NX platform for deploying imaging applications. Among these, Jabło ński et al [4] evaluate the performance of Jetson Xavier NX for real-time image processing for plasma diagnostics. The authors implement several image processing algorithms on the platform and evaluate their performance in terms of speed and accuracy.…”
