Background: Inguinal hernias is known to be most common form of abdominal wall hernias and research studies suggested that 3 out of 4 patients of abdominal wall hernias are diagnosed with inguinal hernia. Inguinal hernioplasty is considered to be second most common general surgical operation worldwide and it accounts approximately 15% of all operations. This retrospective study is designed with aim that to compare open Lichtenstein hernia repair and laparoscopic totally extraperitoneal (TEP) hernia repair in patients with inguinal hernias. The result of the study helps to general surgeons to select the better method to treat inguinal hernias.Methods: This was a retrospective study which was carried out at General Surgery department, Dr. M.K. Shah Medical College and Research Centre, Ahmedabad. Total 100 patients’ data were included in the study that has fulfilled inclusion and exclusion criteria of the study.Results: In present study majority of the patients of both the group are in their 5th decade of their age. It was found that majority of the cases had right side hernia as compare to left side hernia. It was found that mean operative time for bilateral hernia is comparatively higher in Lichtenstein as compared to TEP.Conclusions: Lichtenstein procedure has less postoperative complications like abdominal distension, seroma and urinary infections. Laparoscopic TEP procedure is having less operative time particularly in bilateral hernia, less postoperative pain, early mobilization and early return to work.

Background: Recurrence after surgical treatment of inguinal hernia is still a challenge facing surgeons during their daily practice. Aim of the Work:The current trial aims to compare single and double mesh placement in huge inguinal hernia repair.Patients and Methods: 40 cases were involved in the study. They were classified into two equal groups according to the operative technique [A for single mesh and B for double mesh]. The study's candidates were examined and investigated thoroughly regarding their complaint, the presence of a clinically detectable hernia in the inguinal region, its size, characters, onset, duration, and associated symptoms. Then, all were examined clinically and prepared for surgical intervention after lab investigations. Results:The mean ages were 56 and 56.9 years for groups A and B. Both groups were comparable to body mass index, risk factors, type of hernia, hernia side, and intraoperative blood loss. There was a significant decrease in operative time in group A when compared to group B [54.50 ± 8.256 vs. 61.25 ± 6.664 minutes, respectively]. The overall rate of complications was lower in group B when compared to group A [30.0% vs. 50.0%, respectively]. Complications in group A were seroma [10.0%], wound infection [5.0%], scrotal edema [25.0%], and chronic pain [10.0%]; while in group B, seroma [10.0%], scrotal edema [5.0%], chronic pain [15.0%]. Recurrence was confined to group A, and reported to three patients [15.0%]. However, the difference was statistically nonsignificant. Conclusion: Double mesh technique is a safe and efficacious approach for managing huge inguinal hernia. It is associated with lower rate of recurrence than the single mesh approach with comparable operative time, complications, and outcomes.

Background: Lichtenstein’s hernioplasty is the commonly done surgery for inguinal hernias. The present study is aimed to study the Lichtenstein’s hernioplasty and its postoperative complications for different types of inguinal hernia.Methods: This prospective study was conducted at Department of General Surgery, MVJ Medical College and Research Hospital, Hoskote, Bangalore Rural, Karnataka. A total of 90 patients were selected for this study. Subjects with the age of 21 to 75 years with inguinal hernia are included in the study. A pre-designed proforma was used to collect their details. All selected cases were studied up to discharge regarding the type of hernia and followed up in OPD for 1 year regarding post-operative complications.Results: Immediate post-op complications like seroma/hematoma was observed in 10 (11.1%), wound infection was in 5 (5.5%) and orchitis was in 2 (2.2%). Post-operative complications like stiffness in lower abdomen was observed in 21 (23.3%) patients. Long term complications like forein body sensation was experienced by 22 (24.4) patients post-operatively at 1 month follow up, 8 (8.8%) patients at 3 months follow up and 3 (3.3) patients at 1 year follow up. Chronic pain was experienced by 17 (18.8%) patients at the end of 1 month follow up, at 3 month follow up, 13 (14.4%) patients and at the end of 1 year of follow up 4 (4.4%) patients at operated site. Recurrence was not observed in any of the patient.Conclusions: The study findings indicate that Lichtenstein’s hernioplasty was safe and reliable procedure for inguinal hernia repair.
