Evaluation of patients with symptomatic dermographism

Abstract: Contrary to commonly held opinion, SD may be associated with some diseases and/or triggered by some conditions. In this study, a close temporal relationship between the appearance of SD and psychic factors, drug reactions and scabies was documented. The relation between SD and atopy, hyperthyroidism, diabetes mellitus, menopause and glomerulonephritis seemed unclear.

“…It is usually idiopathic, but it may be associated with systemic use of penicillin, famotidin, and atorvastatin [27,28]. In a review of 40 patients, there is a close relationship between dermatographism and psychic factors, drug reactions, and scabies [27]. Superficial, perivascular leukocytic infiltrations are found in skin.…”

“…Typically, uriticaria pigmentosa lesions can show Darier's sign, or development of a wheal and flare after these lesions are lightly stroked. While patients with mastocytosis can also show dermatographism, this latter condition is much more common, affecting up to 5% of the general population [41], and does not necessarily indicate the presence of a mast cell disease in most patients. Patients with mastocytosis do not have higher incidence of chronic or acute urticaria, although children with mastocytoma have been known to develop generalized hives after physical irritation of the lesion [42].…”
