“…For example, Yamagishi et al [84] modified PES membranes with HEMA using benzophenone (BP) dissolved in the monomer solution followed by UV-irradiation of the solution and the immersed membrane. This approach is relatively simple; however its main drawback is a low local concentration of BP on the membrane surface.…”

“…Yamagishi et al [83,84] for the first time modified the surface of UF PS and PES membranes via UV grafting of vinyl monomers such as 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), using the intrinsic photosensitivity of the PS/PES polymers and their ability to generate free radicals upon UV irradiation. It was shown that the amounts of bovine serum albumin (BSA) adsorbed onto the HEMA modified PES membrane were about 43 and 28% less than for the unmodified PES membranes for 1 and 2 mg/l of BSA in solution, respectively.…”

“…The fractionation of BSA and myoglobin using unmodified and modified polysulfone ultrafiltration membranes was investigated by Eshani and Nystrom [13]. Yamagishi et al [14,15] developed and evaluated a method of photo-grafting vinyl monomers onto poly(aryl sulfone) and polyethersulfone UF membranes without the use of photoinitiators. Pieracci et al [16,17] photo-chemically modified polyethersulfone membranes for the reduction of biofouling.…”

“…Photochemical modification on most polymers has in general been performed using photo-initiators [19][20][21][22] or special compounds with reactive end groups [23,24]. Several polymer materials are photoactive, such as poly (aryl sulfone) (PSf) or poly (ether sulfone) (PES), so that their surface modification does not require photo-initiators [25][26][27][28].…”
