Evaluation of Physiochemical Parameters and Some Heavy Metals from Tannery Effluents of Sharada and Challawa Industrial Areas of Kano State, Nigeria

Abstract: The evaluation of physicochemical parameters and some heavy metals was carried out from six different tannery companies at the industrial areas of Challawa and Sharada, using standard procedures. Temperature, pH, conductivity and total dissolved solids(TDS) were determined using portable digital hand logging meter. The sulphate, phosphate, nitrate, arsenic contents were determined using UV Spectrophotometer, while chloride, dissolved oxygen (DO) and biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) contents were determi… Show more

“…During wet season the lithered and dumped wastes are carried by the runoff or storm water down slope to rivers, ponds or any depressed land [8], [9]. Similarly, indiscriminate disposal of municipal solid wastes, untreated wastewater or sewages from commercial settings, institutions and households into ponds, shallow holes at the back or front of their houses ( [10], [11], [12]). The wastewater continued to gather in small holes and over flow in the surrounding causing foul pungent smelling stagnant water.…”

“…This study does not look at the level of these metals in groundwater which is having an indirect link with the effluents that was why they recommends for more comprehensive research that will targeted reducing the extent of such phenomena in the area. [12] evaluated physicochemical parameters and heavy metals in the tannery effluents around Sharada and Challawa industrial areas in Kano and determined that Cr and Pb exceeded the acceptable limits for both treated and untreated effluents which may have negative impact on human heath that depend on surface and groundwater in the area. The study does not look at Bompai area and it was limited only to tannery effluents.…”

“…Industrial liquid effluents are one of the principal sources of heavy metals responsible for environmental pollution [1]. The current scenario of a sustainable environment is highly vulnerable since most waterborne waste discharges from domestic and industrial sources are channeled into natural water bodies [2]. In recent years, large-scale usage of chemicals in various human activities has grown considerably, and pollution has assumed an escalating dimension due to the continual expansion of urbanization, industrial development, and agricultural activities [3].…”
