Evaluation of postural sway and impact forces during ingress and egress of scissor lifts at elevations

Abstract: Workers are at risk when entering or exiting elevated scissor lifts. In this study, we recorded ground shear forces and postural instability from 22 construction workers while they performed ingress and egress between a scissor lift and an adjacent work surface with varying lift gate opening designs, horizontal and vertical gaps, and sloped work surfaces. From the results of this study, we observed higher peak ground shear forces when using a bar-and-chain opening, with larger horizontal gap, with the lift sur… Show more

“…In essence, the interplay of the crank mechanism, the transmission screw, and the interconnected beams orchestrates a harmonious dance of mechanical energy conversion. This intricate orchestration achieves the transformation of rotary input into linear elevation, embodying the core essence of this scissor lift platform's operational principle (PAN et al, 2017).…”

“…In the last twenty years, lifting and transport systems have been used in many areas, especially factories with Industry 4.0 applications [1][2][3][4]. Scissor lift platforms are the most commonly used among these systems [5][6][7]. These platforms allow for lifting a load safely and working at heights challenging to reach by human power.…”

“…Depending on the required capacity, scissor lifts can come in various sizes and configurations, from portable platforms that can be easily moved around to large industrial ones that can reach 15 m [1] or a lifting load of up to 1.0 tons [2]. Many studies have been conducted on scissor lifts to analyze the operation of the systems.…”
