Evaluation of Probability of Survival Using Trauma and Injury Severity Score Method in Severe Neurotrauma Patients

Abstract: ObjectiveDespite several limitations, the Trauma Injury Severity Score (TRISS) is normally used to evaluate trauma systems. The aim of this study was to evaluate the preventable trauma death rate using the TRISS method in severe trauma patients with traumatic brain injury using our emergency department data.MethodsThe use of the TRISS formula has been suggested to consider definitively preventable death (DP); the deaths occurred with a probability of survival (Ps) higher than 0.50 and possible preventable deat… Show more

“…A study conducted by Moon et al predicted deaths in their study to be 11.13% and in reality the deaths were 12.64% and this difference was not significant. 7 Similar findings were reported by Narouzi et al and Fernandez et al 8,9 Deshmukh et al conducted a study to evaluate the outcome of severely injured patients using the TRISS method in a developing country like India and to compare it with the major trauma outcome study (MTOS). 4 A prospective study of 300 patients of trauma was done.…”

“…However, the higher intervals showed an overestimation of the survival predictions. Previous research suggested an inability of ISS to account enough for multiple injuries to the same body region [29]. While mortality is often attributed to TBI, severe TBI is often not entirely captured by a measure such as the ISS.…”

“…Traffic injury and trauma are the third most common cause of mortality and the second leading cause of disability in all age groups (1,2). The world health organization (WHO) has predicted that by 2020 deaths due to traffic injury will increase to 2.34 million per year (3).…”
