Evaluation of Pumpkin Cultivars for Powdery and Downy Mildew Resistance, Virus Tolerance, and Yield

Abstract: Twenty-six cultivars and two numbered selections of Cucurbita pepo L. pumpkin and four cultivars of C. maxima Duchesne pumpkin were evaluated in field experiments in 1996 and 1997 in Charleston, S.C. The four C. maxima cultivars (`Mammoth Gold', `Big Max', `Rouge Vif d'Etamps', and `Lumina') and three C. pepo cultigens (HMX 6686, HMX 6688, and Magic Lantern) had lower powdery mildew [ Show more

“…In general, the pumpkin yields we obtained under eastern North Carolina conditions were greater than the yields of the same or similar cultivars ('Howden') grown under southeastern coastal plain conditions (Keinath and DuBose, 2000;Wien et al, 1998;2002). Our studies suggest that implementing thorough cultural practices together with selecting regionally adapted cultivars can lead to productive and potentially profi table pumpkin crops for growers under these or similar southeastern U.S. conditions.…”

“…While observations on DM and PM prevalence were only conducted in 1 year of our study, the results suggest that pumpkin cultivars vary in susceptibility to these diseases, as was found by Keinath and DuBose (2000). Therefore, pumpkin production under high humidity conditions like the southeastern U.S. requires a vigorous fungicide spray program and/or foliar disease-resistant cultivar selection.…”

“…Many investigators studied the vegetative and yield variations traits among cucurbit species (Doijode et al, 1982;Rana et al, 1985;Doijode and Sulladmath, 1986;Mondal et al, 1989;Bost et al, 1991;Swamy and Dutta, 1991;Prasad and Singh, 1992;Damarany et al, 1995;Olson et al, 1995;Mohanty and Mishra, 1999;Vallejo et al, 1999 a&b;Keinath and DuBose, 2000;Mohanty, 2000;Alsadon et al, 2002;White, 2002 andMostafa, 2006).…”

“…However, resistance to cucurbit PM has been bred into pumpkin through interspecific hybridization using closely related wild okeechobee gourd (Cucurbita okeechobeensis) and cultivated squash (Cucurbita moschata) species (Cohen et al, 2003). Cucurbit PM-resistant pumpkin varieties were first commercialized in the late 1990s (Keinath and DuBose, 2000). Resistance to cucurbit PM is believed to be conferred by a single incompletely dominant gene, though several recessive resistance genes in melons have also been characterized (Cohen et al, 2003;Jahn et al, 2002).…”
