Evaluation of Punching Shear Strength of Reinforced Concrete Slabs Based on Database

Abstract: Although various studies related to the punching shear strength of slabs have been published, databases related to punching shear strength are small in size. A database of 313 specimens has been structured through the present study, compared to the 114-data compiled by Kakuta et al. (1974) and the 138 data compiled by Gardner et al. (1996). In this study, six equations for the punching shear strength prescribed in specifications were evaluated based on the database. This paper includes a discussion of the para… Show more

“…The JSCE-2002 code [6] assumes that the punching strength is proportional to the square root of the concrete compressive strength. It considers the effect of flexural reinforcement ratio and assumes that the critical perimeter is at 0.5d from the column faces.…”

“…Their method is a uniform design method which is applicable for the cases of with or without punching reinforcement. Hamada et al [6] proposed a simple equation for calculating the punching strength of flat plates. Comparing the calculated punching strength using this equation to test data, a small average error is obtained.…”

“…The data about geometric characteristics, the number of tested footings, and supports used, are clearly arranged and presented in Table 1. Expressions from some regulations, based on the slab punching tests database, are analysed and evaluated in paper [28]. The regulations/standards analysed in this paper comprise ACI (1983), BS (1985), CEB-FIP (1990), prEN (1991), and two Japanese regulations.…”

“…These test results provide reference for the development, verification and evaluation of punching shear design provisions. However, there are divergences among design provisions of various countries in aspects of location and shape of the critical section, calculation method of the nominal stress, value of the ultimate stress and other controlling factors [4][5][6].…”
