“…In recent years, multiple PCR assays have been developed for detection of P. jirovecii, most commonly utilizing primers for the mitochondrial large-subunit rRNA gene (mtLSU) or the multicopy major surface glycoprotein (msg) gene family (39)(40)(41)(42)(43)(44)(45)(46), and these assays appear to be 10 to 100 times more sensitive than microscopic detection of stained organisms. Several commercially available diagnostic PCR kits are approved for clinical use in a number of countries, primarily in Europe (47)(48)(49)(50); none are currently FDA approved for use in the United States.…”

“…Events were categorized as definite PJP if a patient exhibited signs or symptoms of pneumonia, there was presence of radiographic evidence of pneumonia and P jirovecii was identified in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) using microscopy (using a smear stained for P jirovecii) or polymerase chain reaction (PCR; >10 5 copies/mL) [31,32]. Events were categorized as possible PJP if a patient exhibited signs or symptoms of pneumonia, radiographic evidence of pneumonia was present, BAL was either not performed or the PCR result from the BAL yielded a low positive result (<10 5 copies/mL), no other cause of the pneumonia was found and the patient received PJP treatment for a minimum of 7 days (<7 days was accepted if the patient died within 7 days of starting PJP treatment).…”
