Evaluation of respiratory syncytial virus group A and B genotypes among nosocomial and community-acquired pediatric infections in southern Brazil

Abstract: BackgroundRespiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the main cause of lower respiratory tract illness in children worldwide. Molecular analyses show two distinct RSV groups (A and B) that comprise different genotypes. This variability contributes to the capacity of RSV to cause yearly outbreaks. These RSV genotypes circulate within the community and within hospital wards. RSV is currently the leading cause of nosocomial respiratory tract infections in pediatric populations. The aim of this study was to evaluate the… Show more

“…Similarly the predominance of group A RSV over group B viruses was reported from Riyadh in earlier investigations [50,56,59]. Other geographical regions have also described the higher incidence of group A RSV [4,63,64,65]. Two samples (5.7%) were positive for both the groups of RSV in the present study.…”

“…Since then, these BA strain viruses have become the prominent circulating B strains (79)(80)(81)(82)(83)(84)(85). More recently, an A strain with a 72-nucleotide duplication in the C-terminal third of its G protein has become a predominant circulating A strain (79-81, 83, 85-87).…”

“…En el 5% de los casos se detectó la coinfección por los subgrupos A y B, similar a lo encontrado en estudios previos 18,19 . Otros estudios que analizaron varias temporadas también encontraron cocirculación de ambos subgrupos, con alternancia de uno sobre otro según la temporada 3,21 . El patrón epidemiológico encontrado en la infección por el VRS es consistente dentro de la variabilidad de esta infección entre temporadas y lugares 19,22 .…”
