Evaluation of Seismic Vulnerability of Hospitals in the Tehran Metropolitan Area

Abstract: The Tehran metropolitan area is extremely vulnerable to earthquakes due to the location of its active faults and its dense population. Assessing the probable damage of a high magnitude earthquake on buildings and facilities relies on a precise structural survey, which has an empirical basis depending on historic ground motions. The probability of damage and failure in discrete limits based on different ground motions is estimated by fragility curves. Using the most matching fragility curves for buildings in Te… Show more

“…Numerous countries and situations have made use of the HAZUS method. Due to the numerous benefits and advantages of employing local parameters in an algorithm, this is the case [6][7][8][9][10][11][12]. However, some improvements need to be made, as suggested by the researchers.…”

“…The procedure is entirely subjective and based on the expertise and experience of the individuals with little correlation to observed earthquake damage. However, the results may be misleading [6]. The subjective judgment of the expert constantly influences the evaluation and decision-making process.…”

“…The most common method to appraise the expected damage to CI as a result of earthquake events is by a fragility curve [9][10][11]. A fragility curve represents the probability that a component or system will be damaged or disrupted to a given or more severe damage state as a function of an earthquake's intensity measure parameter.…”

“…• The GVM is used to evaluate the vulnerability of the hospital system in a graphical manner, such as using a vulnerability map (Delavar et al 2015;Santa-Cruz et al 2017). Ghaychi Afrouz et al (2021) used the vulnerability curve to estimate the probability of damage and failure of hospitals in Tehran based on different ground motions. They then used the inverse distance squared weighted interpolation method to generate earthquake disaster zone maps.…”
