SUMMARYThis study had the purpose of evaluating the effects of two management types of sugarcane: harvesting of burnt cane (BCH) and mechanized harvesting of unburnt green cane (MCH), on some soil physical properties of a dystrophic Rhodic Haplustox. The data were then compared with results for the same soil type under native forest. A completely randomized design was used, with three treatments and 20 replications. The following characteristics were determined: organic matter, aggregate stability, soil bulk density, and porosity at depths of 0-0.20 m and soil penetration resistance. After 15 years of cultivation, there were some alterations in the soil under cane burnt before harvesting, evidenced by a drop in the weighted average diameter of stable aggregates in water and increased soil bulk density. Significant changes were also detected in total porosity and pore distribution under both harvesting systems. Critical values for penetration resistance were observed in the area under mechanized sugar cane harvesting, with a value of 4.5 MPa in the 40-55 cm layer. This value is considered high and could indicate compaction and restriction of root growth. Soil properties under the green cane (unburned) management system were closest to those of the soil under native forest.Index terms: Saccharum officinarum, soil bulk density, porosity, soil penetration resistance, soil aggregate stability.(

Foi realizada uma coleta de solo em março (período chuvoso) e outra em setembro de 2009 (período de estiagem) nas profundidades de 0-10 cm e de 10-20 cm para análise microbiológica. Os dados de microbiologia do solo foram analisados de forma descritiva por meio da estimação da média e erro padrão da média e também por meio da análise multivariada, estimando-se a distância Euclidiana média entre os tratamentos, com ligação completa. Há formação de grupos entre o manejo orgânico sem revolvimento do solo e a área remanescente de Cerrado indicando proximidade entre os atributos avaliados. A área com manejo convencional com queima apresenta os valores mais altos de respiração e quociente metabólico indicando estresse do sistema solo. O manejo orgânico sem revolvimento do solo apresenta níveis de nitrogênio da biomassa microbiana mais elevados que os demais manejos e a área remanescente de Cerrado. Palavras-chave: Saccharum sp., carbono da biomassa microbiana, respiração basal do solo, manejo orgânico, quociente metabólico AbstractThe objective was to evaluate the microbial soil cultivated with sugar cane certified organic with and without soil disturbance, organic certification, with and without conventional burning and a remaining area of Cerrado in Goiatuba, Goiás. We conducted a soil collected in March (rainy season) and another in September 2009 (dry season) at a depth of 00-10 cm and 10-20 cm for microbiological analysis. The data of microbiology and soil were analyzed descriptively through the estimation of the mean and standard deviation and also by multivariate analysis, estimating the average Euclidean distance between treatments, with complete linkage. There are training groups between organic management without soil disturbance and the remaining area of Cerrado indicating proximity between attributes. The area under conventional conditions with burns presents the highest values of respiration and metabolic quotient indicating stress solo. O organic management system without tilling the soil shows levels of microbial biomass nitrogen higher than the other managements and the remaining area of Cerrado.

Soil attributes under agroecosystems and forest vegetation in the coastal tablelands of northestern Brazil

This study evaluated the changes occurred in a set of soil attributes, particularly those related to the dynamics of soil organic carbon (SOC), as a function of the replacement of native forest for agricultural ecosystems of regional importance in the coastal tablelands of Northeastern Brazil (orange, coconut, eucalyptus and sugarcane). Six commercial sites under these agroecosystems were compared to neighboring areas of native forest in five areas along this region (Coruripe, Umbaúba, Acajutiba, Cruz das Almas and Nova Viçosa). Soil samples were taken from 0-5 and 5-20 cm depth and analyzed for particle size distribution, bulk density, organic C (OC), particulate organic matter, C in soil solution, microbial biomass C, total cation exchange capacity and water stable aggregates. Linear correlation and multivariate techniques were used for data analysis. The values of base saturation and Al saturation for the 0-20 cm depth layer were also calculated. In all the studied areas, soils under native forest presented better status of physical and chemical attributes than their agroecosystem counterparts, especially in the 0-5 cm layer. For both layers, OC content was the attribute most strongly correlated with the overall changes in all attributes. Unexpectedly, the OC content showed no significant correlation with the sum of silt and clay contents. The set of variables investigated in this study is sensitive to differentiate the quality of soils under perennial and semi-perennial land uses from their counterparts under natural vegetation in the landscapes of the coastal tablelands of Northeastern Brazil.Index terms: Cohesive soils, organic C, coastal tablelands, kaolinitic soils. Seis sítios comerciais sob esses agroecossistemas foram comparados a áreas vizinhas de mata nativa, em cinco locais de amostragem ao longo dos tabuleiros costeiros (Coruripe, Umbaúba, Acajutiba, Cruz das Almas e Nova Viçosa) Foram coletadas amostras de solo de 0-5 e de 5-20 cm de profundidade para determinar granulometria, densidade do solo, C orgânico (CO), matéria orgânica particulada, C da solução do solo, C da biomassa microbiana, capacidade de troca catiônica e agregados estáveis em água. Para análise dos dados foram realizadas correlações lineares e análises multivariadas. Os valores de saturação por bases e por Al da camada de 0-20 cm também foram calculados. Em todos os locais, a vegetação com floresta nativa apresentou maior qualidade de atributos químicos e físicos do solo do que os respectivos sistemas agrícolas, principalmente na camada de 0-5 cm.
