Evaluation of Strategies for the Sustainable Transformation of Surface Coal Mines Using a Combined SWOT–AHP Methodology

Abstract: The sustainable transformation of surface coal mines aims to recover geoenvironmental and socioeconomic factors (ecosystems, landscape, soil, water, employment, etc.) related to extractive operations. The transition to sustainability starts when a mine enters the ageing/closing phase and includes large-scale technical activities for repurposing the mined sites. Moreover, circular economy practices and methods are introduced for efficient and socio-environmentally friendly use of mining wastes and non-exploited… Show more

“…The vulnerability of the mining area is caused by reclamation norms that have been studied but are difficult to apply in practice. Therefore, other comprehensive studies are also included, among others, research related to the application of the MCDM model [31][32][33][34]. Similar research has been proposed using the subjective-objective MCDM model in [31] in which AHP and Entropy were used to determine the criterion weights, while modified VIKOR sorted possible reclamation variants.…”

“…While the methodologies of Fuzzy AHP, PROMETHEE (Preference Ranking Organization Method for Enrichment Evaluation), and Fuzzy TOPSIS (Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution) are old and have been extensively explored in prior studies, our research introduces a novel methodology to address the subject of research. The selection of a strategy for the sustainable transformation of a mine constitutes a complex decision-making process that presents various practical challenges [33]. Article [34] discusses the application of the strengths-weaknesses-opportunities-threats (SWOT) analysis and AHP for selecting a sustainable strategy, using the case study of a closed open-pit lignite mine in Greece.…”

“…The research primarily focuses on active coal mining areas, with less emphasis on the closure ones about groundwater pollution and environmental risk. The research on mine closures has also placed emphasis on groundwater levels, , water conservation, ,, chemical composition of groundwater, and the air pollution of surrounding. Such as, Kim et al put forward a simplified model-based program for the analysis and visualization of groundwater rebound in abandoned mines to prevent contamination of water and soils by acid mine drainage .…”
