Evaluation of Systolic Performance by Automated Impedance Cardiography

Abstract: Impedance cardiography (ICG) is a noninvasive method for evaluating cardiac function. Left ventricular stroke volume (SV) is the basic hemodynamic parameter derived from thoracic bioimpedance curves. Issues of our study were to investigate the diagnostic value of other indices of left ventricular systolic performance, such as ejection fraction (EF), index of contractility (IC), peak flow index (PFI), and acceleration index (ACI), which can also be calculated by ICG. Forty patients (PTS) with suspected coronary… Show more

“…Both processes, however, can impact interoception in opposite ways if affected by alpha2-adrenergic blockade. On the one hand, peripheral sympathetic activation increases cardiac contractility (Scherhag, Stastny, Pfleger, Voelker, & Heene, 1999), which increases IAcc (Eichler & Katkin, 1994; Herbert et al, 2010; Moor et al, 2005; Schandry, Bestler, & Montoya, 1993). On the other hand, alpha2-antagonists facilitate alertness, but reduce capacity for focused and selective attention (Clark, Geffen, & Geffen, 1986, 1987; Hermans et al, 2011).…”

“…Possible artifacts were eliminated using signal‐averaging algorithms to avoid influences on cardiac output measurements. This impedance cardiography system has been shown to produce valid measures of cardiodynamic processes (Scherhag et al, 1997, 1999).…”

“…Exact positioning of the electrodes was maintained for the entire study to avoid effects on DZ and dZ/dt max (Sherwood et al, 1990). Correct identification of points B (opening of the aortic valve), P (maximum systolic flow), and X (closure of the aortic valve) on the ICG curves were automatically confirmed by marker channels (e.g., Scherhag et al, 1997;Scherhag, Stastny, Pfleger, Voelker, & Heene, 1999). Possible artifacts were eliminated using signal-averaging algorithms to avoid influences on cardiac output measurements.…”
