Evaluation of technical efficiency of some rain-fed cereal and legume crops production in Syria: does crisis matter?

Abstract: Background Syria is a developing country whose economy is still dominated by the agricultural sector. The agricultural sector is considered as the main source of food in Syria and a major source of employment and income generation. Food and agricultural policies in Syria focus heavily on achieving food security and improving its four pillars (availability, accessibility, stability and utilization). As a result, until 2011, a good progress has been attained in food availability. The food securit… Show more

“…Similarly, refs. [9,18] have examined the relationship between technical efficiency and food security in farming households using the stochastic frontier analysis (SFA) method and the probit model of data from Pakistan. Another aspect associated with gender vis-à-vis efficiency and food security has been studied by [16,19], who highlighted the significant impact of gender on technical efficiency and food security.…”

“…In terms of the methodological approach, a series of approaches have been developed to assess farm efficiency (Ahmed et al, 2020). One of the most widely used efficiency measurement methods is the nonparametric method, due to its advantage of not imposing functional forms on the data (AlFraj and Hamo, 2022;Oulmane et al, 2019;Speelman et al, 2011;Tesema and Gebissa, 2022). Based on the work of Farrell (1957), this method, namely the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) was originally developed by Charnes et al (1978).…”
