Evaluation of the Absorption of Methionine Carried by Mineral Clays and Zeolites in Porcine Ex Vivo Permeability Models

Abstract: Supplemental dietary amino acids (AAs) need to be provided in a form that prevents their degradation along the gastrointestinal tract to guarantee their high bioavailability and bioactivity. In this study, methionine (Met) protected via organo-clay intercalation (natural carriers) has been developed as a sustainable alternative to polymeric coating. Specifically, two different bentonite-zeolite-based mineral clays were tested, Adsorbene (ADS) and BioKi (BIO). Briefly, 1 g of the carrier (ADS or BIO) was contac… Show more

“…Our synthetic approach-solid/liquid adsorption-is known to be effective in preparing organoclays [31,32,56], with the right features as those required for animal nutrition, such as well-dispersed LY loadings and reversible interactions with the carrier. The final result depends on the synthesis parameters [30][31][32]; i.e., the biomolecule concentration, pH, and reaction time, as well as the carrier characteristics, morphology, and the zero point charge.…”

“…Among others, the binding of the bioactive molecule to a suitable carrier via an adsorption process has been proposed and would seem to be a viable, simple, and costeffective solution [30][31][32].…”

“…The FT-IR spectrum of the MBIB ligand showed a change in the position of OH band compared with the original BIB ligand because of the insertion of methionine moiety (Table 3) [11]. A new band appears in the ligand and complex spectra at 1612-1622 cm -1 , which is assigned to the C=O group [12].…”

“…All the details of the spectra are listed in Table 5. The spectrum of MBIB (Figure 10) exhibited the bands in the region of 323 nm (30959 cm -1 ), which were assigned to the π -π* transition [11]. The spectrum of the Ni(II) complex (Figure 11) exhibited a shift in the position of the π -π* transition.…”

“…Accordingly, hybrid materials, consisting of the lysozyme bonded to the inorganic carriers, have been prepared via a solid/liquid adsorption reaction in aqueous environment. This process has already been reported to be easy, environmentally friendly, and cost effective [7,22].…”
