Evaluation of the Accuracy of Different Methods Used to Estimate Weights in the Pediatric Population

Abstract: The Broselow tape is accurate for weight estimation in children < or =25 kg, but the Theron formula performs better with patients weighing >40 kg. The Broselow tape was not statistically superior to the Leffler formula in subjects weighing 25.1 to 40 kg. A separate cohort is needed to evaluate the validity of the alternative predictive formulae.

“…In contrast, reliability declines when weight of the patient increases in concordance with other studies 1,9,23,26 . However reliability of other estimation methods decreases as weight of the patient increases as well it does not bring an additional disadvantage There are also other methods for accurate weight estimation that can be used in the emergency department.…”

“…However it is difficult to decide the reliable method for weight estimation, some methods could give accurate results but they could be time consuming to calculate in an emergent situation 1,13,15 . Other methods may be subject to error they can be easily effected by assessment of different individuals 10 .…”

“…This implies that the BT performs better in lighter children, a finding which has also been reported in other studies. 2,7,8,21,[23][24][25][26][27] The BT has been shown to perform differently in various populations. Two studies from India and a study from south Sudan have reported that the BT overestimates weight.…”
