Evaluation of the corrosion behavior of AZ31 magnesium alloy with different protein concentrations

Abstract: Purpose The purpose of this paper is to study systematically the corrosion behavior of AZ31 magnesium (Mg) alloy with different concentrations of bovine serum albumin (BSA) (0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 and 5.0 g/L). Design/methodology/approach Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and potential dynamic polarization tests were performed to obtain corrosion parameters. Scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) was used to analyze the local electrochemical activity of the surface film. Atomic force microscope (AFM)… Show more

“…The active substances secreted by Vibrio alginolyticus mainly include proteins, peptides, enzymes, amino acids, antibiotics and so on (Banin et al, 2001;Wang et al, 2010). Since proteins and polysaccharides contain unpaired electronic elements and polar groups, they can interact with metal ions and corrosive products and adsorb on the metal surface to affect corrosion (Li et al, 2021b;Ma et al, 2022). The active substances secreted by Vibrio alginolyticus such as antibiotics, can affect the growth and metabolism of SRB.…”

“…In addition, protein denaturation will also form a corrosion inhibition film on the metal surface, thereby delaying the corrosion process of metal (Talha et al, 2019). Ma et al (2021) studied the corrosion behavior of AZ31 magnesium alloy under the action of different concentrations of bovine serum albumin (BSA). The results showed that the corrosion resistance of BSA to AZ31 increased with the increase of its concentration in the range of 0-2.0 g/L.…”

“…Proteins derived from various sources have also been studied as corrosion inhibitors. Bovine serum albumin [ 16 ] and bovine cheese protein [ 17 ], as well as corn gluten powder [ 18 ], were investigated as corrosion inhibitors for magnesium alloy [ 16 ] and steel [ 17 , 18 ].…”
