Evaluation of the de‐selection of men who have had sex with men from blood donation in England

Abstract: Based on current knowledge, accepting blood donations from MSM would probably increase the risk of transfusion-transmission of HIV and of other blood-borne infections. Good compliance with this criterion has contributed greatly to the safety of blood transfusions in England. Better communication about donor selection, to maintain and improve compliance with this and other selection criteria, is recommended. Other risk groups are gaining in relative importance for the risk of transfusion-transmitted HIV infecti… Show more

“…They might not accept the donor selection criteria because they consider them to be discriminatory, especially for MSM. The question whether the permanent deferral from blood donation for MSM should be changed to a temporary deferral leading to a better compliance with the deferral criteria and eventually to higher safety of the blood supply has been discussed intensively on an international level [33][34][35]. Offergeld/Hamouda/Burger analyses.…”

“…The USA study [9] was supplemented by an additional study from England and Wales with a 3.5% prevalence [25] in order to estimate the effect of a 5 years deferral period. A further paper from England was not included as it was based on pre-Nucleic Acid Test detection technologies [26]. …”

“…None of the four references listed at the end of this document is cited in the document text. Furthermore, the references are of questionable value in justifying current U.S. policy: Two of the four references assess the risk effects of MSM policy change in other countries-Canada (Germain, Remis, and Delage 2003) and England (Soldan and Sinka 2003). A third reference compares HIV risk reduction in the United States given two types of NAT screening (Busch et al 2005), and the fourth reference, "Presentation at FDA Blood Products Advisory Committee Meeting, September 2000," includes no specific reference to author or page in this 315-page meeting transcript.…”
