Evaluation of the effect of vincristine on platelet count in dogs with lymphoma

Abstract: Objectives To determine the effect of vincristine administration on the platelet count, platelet morphology and incidence of thrombocytopenia in dogs diagnosed with lymphoma. Material and Methods Medical records of 59 dogs with lymphoma receiving vincristine sulphate were reviewed retrospectively. Results Following vincristine administration the platelet count was higher and the number of thrombocytopenic patients was lower. No difference was found in the number of dogs with enlarged and elliptical platelets f… Show more

“…Thrombocytosis was observed in vincristine-treated patients with malignancies [37]. This phenomenon of increasing platelet counts was also observed in normal dogs or dogs with lymphoma with clinical vincristine treatment [12,18,20,38]. This ability of vincristine to increase platelet counts has led vincristine or vincristine-loaded platelets to be used to treat patients with ITP [11][12][13]15].…”

[31][32][33][34] Cats: a. There is insufficient evidence to determine with certainty if vincristine affects patient-centered outcomes in cats with pITP, but the limited evidence that is available suggests that vincristine may not be effective.…”

“…Moreover, given that thrombocytopenia is a common hematologic finding in dogs with lymphoma and leukemia, changes in platelet measurands in dogs with or without thrombocytopenia might provide useful information regarding diagnosis, prognosis, and possibly therapy. 6,24 The first objective of this study was to establish RIs for each of these measurands in a population of healthy dogs and evaluate whether differences exist when accounting for sex and age. The second objective was to compare platelet measurands from a healthy population of dogs with hematologic neoplasia and normal platelet counts.…”
