Evaluation of the Effect of Sulfur on the Performance of Nickel/Gadolinium‐Doped Ceria Based Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Anodes

Abstract: The focus of this study is the measurement and understanding of the sulfur poisoning phenomena of Ni/gadolinium‐doped ceria (CGO) based solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC). Cells with Ni/CGO10 and NiCu5/CGO40 anodes were characterized by using impedance spectroscopy at different temperatures and H2/H2O fuel ratios. The short‐term sulfur poisoning behavior was investigated systematically at temperatures of 800–950 °C, current densities of 0–0.75 A cm−2, and H2S concentrations of 1–20 ppm. A sulfur poisoning mitigatio… Show more

“…Thus, the Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ ratio determines the chemical capacitance values which stretch over a whole order of magnitude (0.1-1 F·cm -2 ). This quantitatively confirms an effect that we already qualitatively observed in sulfur poisoning experiments of Ni/CGO electrodes in our recent work (12).…”

“…Different possible fuel oxidation mechanisms were extensively discussed in our previous work, and the possibility of competitive pathways at double phase and triple phase boundary was pointed out (12,18,19). Thus, it is possible that the change in hydrogen oxidation mechanism is the reason for the different slopes in Figure 4a.…”

“…The active area of the planar cells was 4 x 4 cm 2 with a total area of 5 x 5 cm 2 . The setup for cell testing enables the characterization of up to four cells simultaneously and has been illustrated and described in detail elsewhere (11,20). All gases were supplied via mass flow controllers.…”
