Coronavirus disease 2019 is a worldwide pandemic resulting in a severe acute respiratory syndrome. Remdesivir is the only FDA-approved drug for hospitalized patients older than age 12. It shows the necessity of finding new therapeutic strategies. Functional foods (FFs) could have co-therapeutic and protective effects against COVID-19 infection. Traditional Persian medicine (TPM), one of the safest and most popular schools of medicine for hundreds of years, has recommended potential FF candidates to manage such a global pandemic. To reveal the potential of TPM in terms of antitussive FFs, traditional Persian pharmacopoeia “Qarabadin-e-Salehi” was searched using the keywords “Soaal” and “Sorfeh.” Also, a search of MEDLINE, PubMed Central, Google Scholar, and Science Direct was performed for the relevant literature published from the inception up to March 2021. A combination of search terms including “cough, antitussive, antioxidant, anti-inflammation, antiviral, COVID-19, mucoactive, mucolytic, expectorant, and mucoregulatory” was also applied. The potential mechanism of action in SARS-CoV-2 infection was discussed. Twelve TPM FFs were found including Laooqs, Morabbas, a Saviq, a soup, and a syrup. They are combinations of two to seven ingredients. Natural compounds of mentioned formulations have the main pharmacological mechanisms including antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antihistamine, bronchodilator, immunomodulatory, and mucoactive effects as well as central or peripheral antitussive activities. FFs are cost-effective, easily accessible, and safe options for both treatment and prevention of COVID-19. They might have positive psychological effects along with their pharmacological effects and nutritional virtues. They could also manage persistent respiratory discomforts after recovery from COVID-19.

Objectives: Heavy Menstrual Bleeding (HMB) is the most important problems of Uterine Leiomyoma (UL). This study aimed to assess the effect of the extract of the Capsella bursa-pastoris (CBP) on the control of HMB and quality of life in patients with uterine leiomyoma. Design: In a double-blind randomized, clinical trial 54 women with uterine leiomyoma were randomly assigned to the intervention/control groups by block randomization. Setting: Gynecology outpatient clinics. Intervention: The intervention group received 350 mg of alcoholic extract of Capsella bursa-pastoris and the control group received placebo twice daily for three months. Main Outcome Measures: Amount of bleeding by Pictorial blood loss assessment chart (PBAC), quality of life by menstrual quality of life questionnaires (MQ) and bleeding duration by calendar were evaluated. Results: The mean of PBAC decreased from 464.00± 283.61 at baseline to 323.82±207.66 in the intervention group and decreased from 445.92±362.64 to 214.36±137.68 in control group in the third month. The improvement trend was significant in the two groups, but there was no significant difference between groups. The mean of bleeding duration and menstrual quality of life showed improvement in patients of two groups without significant difference between the two groups. Conclusion: Despite the effectiveness of CBP in the intervention group in decreasing of PBAC score and menstrual bleeding duration and improvement of menstrual quality of life in patients who suffered from UL, it did not show a significant effect compared to the control group. Future studies with a larger sample size in one specific type of UL suggested.

BACKGROUND: Many women around the world avoid taking iron supplements during their menstrual bleeding, thinking that menstrual bleeding will increase after taking these supplements. Due to the lack of relevant scientific evidence in this regard, this study was performed to determine the effect of iron supplementation on menstrual blood volume and hemoglobin level during menstrual bleeding. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this three-blind randomized clinical trial, 160 non-anemic female students of Rafsanjan University of Medical Sciences were selected through a public call and then they were randomly assigned to two intervention and control groups. The intervention group was given a ferrous sulfate tablet containsing 50 mg of elemental iron daily in the first four days of bleeding for three consecutive menstrual cycles, and the control group received a placebo simultaneously. Before and after the intervention, the level of hemoglobin was measured and the Higham chart was completed in each menstrual cycle by the participants of the two groups. The obtained data were analyzed using the SPSS software version 21 and Chi-square, independent t-test, paired t-test, analysis of variance with repeated measures, and nonparametric tests. RESULTS: Before performing the intervention, the mean Higham score and hemoglobin level of the two groups were not statistically significant (P = 0.307, P = 0.670). The mean Higham score after each intervention was not statistically significant between the two groups over time or when considering the interaction of the time group (P = 0.77, P = 0.916). The hemoglobin level of these two groups did not change significantly after the intervention compared with that before the intervention (P = 0.444). CONCLUSION: Compared with a placebo, taking iron supplements containing 50 mg of elemental iron during the first four days of menstrual bleeding in non-anemic women did not change the volume of menstrual bleeding and hemoglobin level.
