Evaluation of the effects of different forms of periodontal diseases on quality of life with OHIP‐14 and SF‐36 questionnaires: A cross‐sectional study

Abstract: Objectives:To investigate the effect of generalized aggressive periodontitis (GAP), generalized chronic periodontitis (GCP) and gingivitis (G) on oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) with Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14) and Short Form-36 (SF-36) questionnaires. Methods:One hundred GAP patients, 114 GCP and 109 G patients were included in the study. Age, gender, number of missing teeth, probing depth (PD), bleeding on probing (BOP), plaque index (PI) and clinical attachment level (CAL) of patien… Show more

“…Long‐standing bleeding on probing is associated with greater attachment loss and greater risk of tooth loss over time 11,26,27 . Furthermore, a number of studies have shown that even mild gingivitis can be associated with pain, discomfort, and difficulties performing oral hygiene 28‐30 . Improvement in gingival health is thus associated with improvements in health‐related quality of life 31,32 .…”

“…Os resultados mostram que a doença periodontal causa um impacto negativo na qualidade de vida relacionada à saúde oral (Al-Kattan et al, 2019;Ansari Moghadam et al, 2015;El Tantawi & AlAgl, 2017;Eltas et al, 2016;Fuller et al;Geevarghese et al, 2017;Goel & Baral, 2017;Göktürk & Uçan Yarkaç, 2018;He et al, 2018;Holde et al, 2018;Irani et al, 2015;Karaaslan & Dikilitas, 2019;Levin, Zini, Levine, Weiss, Lev, Taub, et al, 2018;Levin, Zini, Levine, Weiss, Lev, Hai, et al, 2018;Liang et al, 2020;Llanos et al, 2018;Maia et al, 2018;Masood et al, 2019;Meusel et al, 2015;Musurlieva & Stoykova, 2015;Nayak et al, 2017;Oliveira et al, 2020;Passos-Soares et al, 2018;Rebelo et al, 2016;Rekhi et al, 2016;Schmalz et al, 2018;Ustaoglu et al, 2019;Wellapuli & Ekanayake, 2016;Wright et al, 2017;Yaacob et al, 2019;Yadav et al, 2019). Além disso, a doença foi associada a uma diminuição na qualidade do sono (Karaaslan & Dikilitas, 2019), e quanto mais severa era a destruição periodontal, pior era a qualidade de vida (Fuller et al;Göktürk & Uçan Yarkaç, 2018;He et al, 2018;Karaaslan & Dikilitas, 2019;Levin, Zini, Levine, Weiss, Lev, Hai, et al, 2018;…”

“…31 Besides, they concluded that the mean score (± SD) of OHIP-14 was 1.92 ± 5.47 and this score was relatively low compared to those in elderly people and clinical periodontal conditions such as the plaque score, and % bleeding on probing did not show a significant effect on OHRQoL. 31 Ustaoglu et al 32 evaluated the effect of generalized aggressive periodontitis (GAP), generalized chronic periodontitis (GCP), and gingivitis (G) on QoL in young adult individuals. They concluded that different forms of periodontal disease had different effects on the QoL of patients, and patients with GCP and GAP had poorer QoL than G patients.…”

“…Elderly patients with periodontitis had lower QoL in terms of discomfort compared to the young adult patients, and this result was consistent with other studies. 8,32,33 Besides, the increase in the number of tooth loss in the elderly compared to young people in periodontitis may be the reason why elderly periodontitis patients have lower QoL in terms of discomfort. OHIP scores were lower in elderly patients with gingivitis compared to young patients with gingivitis.…”
