Evaluation of the efficacy of benzothiazole against the red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum (Herbst)

Abstract: BACKGROUNDIn the context of the resistance development and health risks of currently used fumigants, it is urgent to seek more effective and ecofriendly compounds for stored‐product pest control. The microbial volatile compound benzothiazole is known to have fungicidal and insecticidal activity; however, its detailed efficacy on storage pests is largely unknown.RESULTSBenzothiazole was identified for its great ovicidal, larvicidal, pupicidal and adulticidal activity against Tribolium castaneum, and exhibited p… Show more

“…Benzothiazole can induce apoptosis and suppress stress responses and metabolic detoxification to inhibit the growth of Phytophthora capsici (Leonian) (Peronosporales: Peronosporaceae) 57 . Also, benzothiazole was identified to have a great insecticidal activity and repellency against red flour beetle, Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) 58 . The attractiveness of the mixture of these compounds to H. axyridis , however, still requires further study.…”

Little information exists on the remaining six compounds in the group of 12 that weas released at higher rates by aphid-infested plants.…”

“…Kim et al [195] developed a polymeric resin-supported solidphase protocol for the synthesis of 2-aminobenzothiazolebased libraries. This approach involves the treatment of 2iodophenyl isothiocyanate (46) with polymeric resin tethered amine (45) leading to the formation of 2-iodophenyl thiourea (47), which undergoes intramolecular oxidative cyclization to yield resin-bound 2-aminobenzothiazole (49). The protocol offered wide substrate scope as alkylation with an alkyl halide, acyl halide, and sulfonyl halide led to the formation of N-alkyl- (51), N-acyl- (53), and N-sulfonyl-2-aminobenzothiazole (55) analogues.…”

“…Benzothiazole derivatives have enormous pharmacophoric potential, and the potential drug candidates possessing this moiety have evolved as successful commercial drugs (Figure 1). The benzothiazole skeleton was widely used as vulcanization accelerator, [42] plant growth regulator, [43] imaging reagent, [44] fluorescence material, [45] selective ions detector, [46] fumigants and pest repallant [47] and electroluminescent device, [48] etc.…”

“…In this context, biogenic compounds are being developed as candidate pesticides due to their rich sources, easy degradability, diverse action modes and environmental friendliness 4 . The natural volatile compound benzothiazole, which comes from either plants or microorganisms, 5,6 has been demonstrated to be a potential fumigant and repellent in controlling the important storage pest Tribolium castaneum 7,8 . It has a wide spectrum of action against both insects (such as Bradysia odoriphaga ) and fungi (such as Botrytis cinerea ) 9 .…”
