Evaluation of the i-STAT Alinity v in a veterinary clinical setting

Abstract: Many point-of-care (POC) analyzers are available for the measurement of electrolytes and acid-base status in animals. We assessed the precision of the i-STAT Alinity v, a recently introduced POC analyzer, and compared it to 2 commonly used and previously validated POC analyzers (i-STAT 1, Stat Profile pHOx Ultra). Precision was evaluated by performing multiple analyses of whole blood samples from healthy dogs, cats, and horses on multiple i-STAT Alinity v analyzers. For comparison between analyzers, whole bloo… Show more

“…The identified variables are similar to those identified as prognostic markers in previous studies of acute colitis in horses 2,3,5 . A major strength of these prognostic variables is that they are easily assessed, even under field conditions 28,29 . Preadmission decision making is desirable for several reasons, not least from an animal welfare point of view.…”

“…ISEs are robust, reliable, and low-cost systems that can be miniaturized easily, which has made them popular in numerous fields, including environmental, agricultural, and industrial analysis [19]. Besides their commercialization in human healthcare [20], portable blood analyzers that employ ISEs are also commercially available in veterinary clinical applications [21]. A recent fully integrated portable paper microfluidic device for the determination of ions in blood was developed by Jin et al [16].…”

“…Specifically the i-STAT alinity has the ability to perform arterial blood gas analysis (Cg4+) and electrolyte analysis (Chem8) with acceptable performance. 4 These tools in the translational research realm provide a quick and reliable way to perform basic analysis in the management of animals or measurement for end points of care.…”
