Evaluation of the malignancy of glioma using 11 C-methionine positron emission tomography and proliferating cell nuclear antigen staining

Abstract: 11C-methionine positron emission tomography (PET) and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) staining were performed in 13 cases of glioma to investigate the relationship between the uptake of L-[methyl]-11C-methionine and the degree of malignancy and proliferative potential. The 11C-methionine uptake was significantly greater in high-grade gliomas compared to low-grade gliomas (P<0.05). The PCNA indexes were also significantly higher in the high-grade cases (P<0.05). Moreover, a strong positive correlation… Show more

“…87,88 [ 11 C]MET-uptake correlates to cell proliferation in vitro, the expression of Ki-67 and proliferating cell nuclear antigen, as well as to microvessel density, explaining its role as a marker for active tumor proliferation. 82,89,90 The intensity of [ 11 C]METuptake differentiates between WHO II°and WHO III°/ IV°gliomas (FIG. 3).…”

“…[ 11 C]MET is a sensitive tracer in tumor detection, and it differentiates benign from malignant lesions with high sensitivity and specificity with relatively low background activity in normal brain tissue (5,10). [ 11 C]MET uptake correlates to cell proliferation in cell culture (11), Ki-67 expression (12), proliferating cell nuclear antigen expression (13), and microvessel density (14), indicating its role as a marker for active tumor proliferation and angiogenesis.…”

“…[10][11][12][13][14][15] In addition, MET uptake has been correlated with Mib-1 labeling index (LI), proliferating cell nuclear antigen, microvessel attenuation, and survival. [14][15][16][17][18] Mib-1 LI is a good marker to determine proliferative activity and has an important role in determining both malignant neoplasm and a patient's prognosis. To our knowledge, no study has been published regarding MET uptake and proliferative activity for patients with grade II glioma only.…”
