Evaluation of the production of acorns of the oak ( Quercus ilex Lam. ssp. ballota ) from south-west of Extremadura (Spain).

Abstract: Over 2 years (1997-98 and 1998-99) the total production and seasonal distribution of the holm-oak acorn in the montanera (October-January) was measured in five dehesas in the south-west of Extremadura (Spain). The average total production of the five dehesas varied between 600 and 830 kg of acorns/ha, with large variations between the different dehesas. The availability of acorns was much larger in the first half of the montanera in most of the dehesas. The month of highest production changed with the year and… Show more

“…Alvarez et al [3] harvested an average production of 10.45 kg DM/tree from Salamanca dehesas with a tree density of 25 trees/ha on the assumption of a water content of 45% for the fruits. Poblaciones et al [22] estimated the average acorn production over a two-year period in five dehesas in Extremadura (W Spain) to be 600-830 kg DM/ha and found large differences between individual dehesas; these levels are higher than the average production values for our plots (227.5 kg DM/ha).…”

“…All previous studies related with acorn production (Martin et al 1998;Á lvarez et al 2002;Carbonero et al 2002;Gea-Izquierdo et al 2006;Poblaciones et al 2006;Cañellas et al 2007;Alejano et al 2008) have not considered these two components separately. Nevertheless, to get a better understanding of the acorn production process it is very important to analyze both components separately, as silvicultural and ecological factors will affect them differently.…”
