Evaluation of the Seismic Response of a Historical Earthen Structure Based on a Discrete Macro-Element Modelling Approach

Abstract: In the Peruvian Andes, a major portion of heritage buildings are made of adobe masonry. Due to the low mechanical properties of this material, historical constructions are mostly characterized by a weak and brittle behavior especially when subjected to seismic loading. In addition, heritage adobe buildings are characterized by timber roofs which do not guarantee a box-type behavior and enable the occurrence of local mechanisms in the out-of-plane direction. During the last decades, there has been an increasing… Show more

“…The classification of the computational methods applied to the different earthen typologies discussed is presented in Table 1. Chácara et al (2019) studied adobe using an EFM approach. They developed a novel 3D macro-element model capable of Global distribution of earthen architecture and location of UNESCO WHL sites on earthen architecture [adapted from Mužíková et al (2018)] and percentage of use of the different earthen construction techniques on the listed sites included in the WHEAP inventory (Gandreau and Delboy, 2012).…”

“…The mushroom house examined in this paper was constructed with a wooden component frame as its supporting system. Unlike adobe brick structures, there is no constraint between the facade wall and the structure [49,50]. In accordance with the "Technical Standard for Multi-High-Rise Wooden Structure Buildings" GB/T 51226-2017 [51], within eight-degree fortified areas, the height of pure wooden structure buildings should not exceed 17 m, and the height-to-width ratio should not exceed three.…”
