The relationships between aquatic vegetation, anthropogenic pressures and water quality in 83 Polish lowland lakes were analysed in order to select the best responding macrophyte metrics to be used in ecological status assessment. Several metrics describing the syntaxonomic composition, abundance and spatial structure of macrophytes were tested in three morphological lake types (deep regular-shaped, deep ribbon-shaped and shallow) separately by using the Spearman rank correlation coefficients. Among all the parameters tested, only some anthropogenic pressure parameters (the percentage share of urban areas and forests in a catchment, the pollution load from point sources) and all the water quality indicators (TP, TN, Chla, SD) were significantly correlated with most of the macrophyte metrics, although for different lake types the strength and significance of relationships varied substantially. The macrophyte metrics which best responded to anthropogenic pressures and water quality changes were: (i) in deep regular-shaped lakes: the percentage share of Chara phytocenoses and rush phytocenoses in the total phytolittoral area, the maximum depth of plant distribution and the colonisation index; (ii) in deep ribbon-shaped lakes: the hydrophytes/helophytes area ratio, the percentage share of submerged and rush phytocenoses in the total phytolittoral area; (iii) in shallow lakes: the percentage share of Chara phytocenoses and rush phytocenoses in the total phytolittoral area, and the hydrophytes/helophytes area ratio. These metrics can then be used when elaborating new or refining existing macrophyte-based methods of ecological status assessment.

-Strong human impact accelerates eutrophication which deteriorates water quality and consequently prevents recreational use. Increasing trophy and low transparency induce macrophyte rebuilding. A gradual transformation of the land use of the direct catchment area of Raczyń skie Lake from agricultural to recreational has been observed over the last 45 years. In built-up areas sewage facilities were inadequate and septic tanks did not work properly and as a consequence most wastewater was able to infiltrate through the ground into the lake. The lake ecosystem became unstable and water blooms intensified. The aim of the study was to assess the changes in the composition of the lake vegetation over the last 45 years, during which the use of the direct catchment has changed and recreational pressure increased. A reduction of the number of plant communities from 24 to 15 and the disappearance of almost all the submerged vegetation was observed. The dominant reed beds (Phragmitetum communis, Typhetum angustifoliae) were unable to provide a sufficient barrier to the flow of pollution from the catchment because of the numerous gaps made for angling piers, bathing sites, jetties, etc. The macrophyte index indicated a bad ecological status. To improve the ecological status of Raczyń skie Lake it is necessary to introduce intensive protection and restoration treatments.Keywords: macrophyte community / submerged macrophyte / human impact / recreation / WFD Résumé -Réponse de la végétation à la pression récréative croissante dans le lac peu profond Raczyń ski. Un fort impact humain accélère l'eutrophisation, ce qui détériore la qualité de l'eau et, par conséquent, empêche l'utilisation récréative. L'augmentation de trophie et la faible transparence induisent la dégradation des macrophytes. Au cours des 45 dernières années, on a observé une transformation graduelle de l'utilisation des terres du bassin versant proche du lac Raczynskie, qui est passé de l'agriculture aux loisirs. Dans les zones bâties, les installations d'égouts étaient inadéquates et les fosses septiques ne fonctionnaient pas correctement, de sorte que la plupart des eaux usées pouvaient s'infiltrer dans le lac par le sol. L'écosystème du lac est devenu instable et la prolifération d'algues s'est intensifiée. L'objectif de l'étude était d'évaluer les changements dans la composition de la végétation lacustre pendant les 45 dernières années, au cours desquelles l'utilisation du bassin versant a changé et la pression récréative a augmenté. On a observé une réduction du nombre de communautés végétales de 24 à 15 et la disparition de presque toute la végétation submergée. Abstract. The possibility of doing a back assessment of the ecological status of a lake based on archival bathymetric maps indicating areas overgrown with rushes and aquatic vegetation was verified. This assessment was assumed to be in accordance with that performed with the official Polish macrophyte-based method for lake assessment (Ecological State Macrophyte Index, ESMI). The study was conducted on Lake Dobr¹g located in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship (surface area -108 ha, maximum depth -27.9 m, mean depth -11.6 m). It included the hydroacoustic distribution of submerged macrophytes along 85 evenly distributed belt transects (perpendicularl to the shore line), creating a bathymetric chart and maps of vegetation occurrence and identifying areas occupied by hydrophytes (C max ) and the maximum depth of lake colonization (Z). Analogous data were read from archival bathymetric chart dating from [1964][1965][1966][1967][1968]. The values obtained were compared with the means (and their confidence intervals) of 83 stratified lakes in Poland in different ecological status classes. Analysis of changes indicated that the ecological status of the lake had deteriorated. In the mid-1960s, the status of the lake was less than "very good" while the current status borders between "good" and "moderate." The results indicate that the proposed method could be useful when attempting to assess changes in ecological status using archival bathymetric charts showing areas overgrown with vegetation and the distribution of it in lakes.
