Evaluation of the surface strength of glass plates shaped by hot slumping process

Abstract: Abstract. Hot slumping technology is under development by several research groups in the world for the realization of grazing-incidence segmented mirrors for x-ray astronomy, based on thin glass plates shaped over a mold at temperatures above the transformation point. The performed thermal cycle and related operations might have effects on the strength of the glass, with consequences for the structural design of the elemental optical modules and, consequently, on the entire x-ray optic for large astronomical m… Show more

“…A further slight damage is introduced by the hot slumping process, contributing to a reduction of the glass foil resistance, as already demonstrated with D263 glass foils (Proserpio 2014). Therefore, we considered the possibility to re-enhance the glass strength after the slumping.…”

“…It is a direct replication approach, which means that the surface in contact with the mould is the one that will be used for the reflection. As the thermal cycle and the contact of the glass with the mould might affect the strength of the glasses, our group carried out an intense study to check the effect of the slumping process on the strength of the glasses (Proserpio , 2014. This work was committed by the European Space Agency, to be addressed with a statistical approach (Weibull statistics) due to the large number of IXO glass mirror segments (16.560).…”

“…However, if molding dies have shape errors, glass plates transform along molding die shape with its errors, as shown in (c) area of Figure 11(c). In this method, shape errors of molding die greatly affects to shape errors of formed glass plate [21][22][23]. The shape errors and edge transformation of glass plate will be examined as the future works.…”
