Evaluation of the Therapeutic Potential of Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSCs) in Preclinical Models of Autoimmune Diseases

Abstract: Autoimmune diseases, chronic in nature, are generally hard to alleviate. Present long-term treatments with available drugs such as steroids, immune-suppressive drugs, or antibodies have several debilitating side effects. Therefore, new treatment options are urgently needed. Stem cells, in general, have the potential to reduce immune-mediated damage through immunomodulation and T cell regulation (T regs) by inhibiting the proliferation of dendritic cells and T and B cells and reducing inflammation through the g… Show more

“…It is well known that PGE2 is one of the most important mediators of MSC achieving immunosuppressive capacity and treating diseases. 17 promote IL-10 secretion by macrophages through the secretion of PGE2. 18 In a collagen-induced arthritis model, MSCs secreted PGE2 to improve local inflammatory response.…”

“…MSCs are a type of pluripotent nonhematopoietic stem cell with immune regulatory ability [ 11 ], and they are widely used to treat various inflammatory diseases [ 24 , 25 ]. Moreover, MSCs have been reported to exert therapeutic effects in various animal models of autoimmune diseases, such as lupus erythematosus and rheumatoid arthritis [ 26 ]. The immune regulatory ability of MSCs is plastic, and the high content of inflammatory factors in the body promotes their immunosuppressive effects.…”
