Evaluation of Tocopherol Recovery Through Simulation of Molecular Distillation Process

Abstract: DISMOL simulator was used to determine the best possible operating conditions to guide, in future studies, experimental works. This simulator needs several physical-chemical properties and often it is very difficult to determine them because of the complexity of the involved components. Their determinations must be made through correlations and/ or predictions, in order to characterize the system and calculate it. The first try is to have simulation results of a system that later can be validated with experime… Show more

“…Soybean oil deodorizer distillate is one of the important sources for the preparation of natural tocopherols. Soybean V E concentrate is usually prepared from deodorizer distillate by solvent extraction [6] and molecular distillation [7]. High purity aT can be obtained by methylation of non-alpha T [8].…”

“…Molecular distillation is suitable for separation and purification of reaction mixtures with a high boiling point, high viscosity and thermally unstable materials, and it has been widely used in food, spice, pharmaceutical, chemical and petroleum industries [17]. The reaction mixtures, which were produced under the above optimal conditions, were purified by a rotary evaporator and two-step molecular distillation.…”

“…Molecular distillation works at low pressures and high temperatures, and has advantages over other techniques that use solvents as separating agents [10]. It has been regarded as the most suitable distillation method for separating and purifying heat-sensitive products such as: fatty accompaniments [11,12]; monoacylglycerols and diacylglycerols [13,14]; eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid ethyl esters [15,16]; as well as for removing undesirable molecules [17]. Furthermore, molecular distillation also traditionally plays a significant role in oil refining (especially in oils with high FFA contents such as RBO) in the deacidification and deodorization processes [10,18,19].…”
