Evaluation of torsional resistance and bending stiffness of coronal flaring nickel-titanium instruments

Abstract: Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the bending and torsional resistance of the following instruments: Mtwo 25/.07 (MT - VDW, Munich, Germany), Navigator W-XN 25.07 (WXN - Wizard Navigator, Medin, Nové Město na Moravě, Czech Republic), ProTaper Universal SX 19/.04 (PSX - Dentsply Tulsa Dental Specialties, Tulsa, USA), MK Orifice Shapper 17/.08 (OS - MK Life Medical and Dental Products, Porto Alegre, Brazil) and MK Sequence 17.12 (MKS - MK Life Medical and Dental Products, Porto Alegre… Show more

“…The design features (taper, cross-sectional) of the NiTi instruments can affect the metal mass volume, also modifying its torsional behaviour [3,13,15,16,22]. Additionally, the different heat treatment among the instruments can favour a different crystallographic arrangement of crystal structure of the NiTi, which change its flexibility [2,[15][16][17][18]23]. These aforementioned factors might explain the results of the torsional test.…”

“…Cyclic fatigue resistance could be carried out either at room temperature or at body temperature, indeed carrying the test in body temperature is more clinically relevant 10 , moreover the time to fracture was the method of testing instead of the number of cycles to fracture as we are comparing a rotary glide path file with a reciprocating glide path file 11 . The test was carried in an artificial canal for standardization of the experiment settings for both files.…”

“…The non-cutting tip of EP with #14/.04 file ensures a safe passage down the canal in minimally invasive way 5 . R-Motion glider are reciprocating instruments with tip size with #15/.03 and rounded triangular cross-section with sharp cutting edges and thinner core size to reduce the screwing effect, during root canal preparation [10]. This unique design provides the perfect combination for high cutting efficiency down to the apex, while preserving dentine 6 .…”

“…Compared with traditional stainless steel devices, nickel-titanium devices have distinct advantages, including superelasticity, flexibility, fatigue resistance, and shape memory [24][25][26]. The flexibility and fracture resistance of NiTi instruments are 2-3 times higher than those of stainless steel files [27], which makes them more efficient and safer [28].…”
