“…The index is based on a 5-year lookback window of hospitalizations. It is a summative scale that considers 31 domains, and we used cut-points of 0, 1, 2, and more than 2 25,26 , with greater comorbidity resulting in higher scores.…”

“…In the ocr dataset, TNM categories and stage groups were not reliably available for patients with hnc during the period of interest 26 . We created a surrogate for extent of disease based on surgical billing codes for total resection (T3-4), partial resection (T1-2), and neck dissection (N0 or N+) to create 3 groups: early, early N+, and advanced (Table i).…”

“…1 Supraglottic cancer (SC), which accounts for 30%-40% of patients with laryngeal cancers, is characterized by a high rate of lymph node metastases, even in earlystage tumors (T1-2). 2 The high lymph node metastasis rate contributes to a worse prognosis in SC than with glottic cancer. 3 Therefore, reducing lymph node Abbreviations: cN0, clinically negative cervical lymph nodes; ELNs, examined lymph nodes; HR, hazard ratio; LND, lymph node dissection; OS, overall survival; PSM, propensity score matching; SC, supraglottic cancer; SEER, Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results program.…”

“… Area‐level socioeconomic status (SES) of location‐specific income quintiles was based on Statistics Canada 2006 census data matched to postal codes providing data at level of enumeration units (neighborhoods) Comorbidity was estimated using the Elixhauser Index based on hospital discharge data with look back of 2 years (1/1/2006 to 12/31/2007). Elixhauser created a summative scale over 31 domains for administrative data and we used the cut‐points of 0, 1, 2, >2 with greater comorbidity creating higher scores Time on study was the number of consecutive patient days from 1/1/2008 to the earliest date of death, loss OHIP eligibility or end of study period (12/31/2012). Rurality was based on the Statistics Canada Postal Code Conversion File from the 2006 census and reported by Metropolitan Influence Zones (MIZ). …”
