Evaluation of True Polarization Diversity for MIMO Systems

Abstract: Abstract-MIMO systems where multipath fading is only partially correlated could use polarization diversity to provide a higher diversity gain. Recent letters have proposed the use of tri-polarized antennas and a novel true polarization diversity (TPD) scheme. In this paper, the full potential of TPD is evaluated with both simulations and measurements and compared to conventional orthogonal polarization diversity (OPD). MIMO system performance with respect to capacity and diversity gain is obtained through the … Show more

“…The modulation block is used to modulate the original binary data symbol using the complex constellation QPSK, 16 QAM or 64..QAM according to the LTE standard [12,13,14]. Multiple antennas can be used at the transmitter and receiver, therefore multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) encoders are needed to increase the spatial diversity or the channel capacity.…”

“…The employed error (fitness) function within the GA was a sum squared error (SSE)-based function, which can be easily implemented at a reasonable computation complexity for the task at hand. Since , for the sample-selection problem, we are looking for best fits to target density functions, which range from 0 to 1, the conventional SSE formula was modified as (2) where is the number of bins used to calculate the density function. To achieve a reasonable ratio between computing time and accuracy, the fitness value was limited to 0.01 by default.…”

“…This causes a multireflective environment that is repeatable and can be statistically studied. MSCs can be used as a very fast, easy, and accurate tool to measure a wide variety of MIMO parameters [1], [2]. There is yet a shortage of studies of their delay spread and isotropicity properties.…”

“…In one of the earliest references to polarisation diversity, Lee & Yeh [11] demonstrated the feasibility of providing two diversity branches at UHF by polarisation diversity. Further, MIMO systems with partially correlated multipath fading can use polarisation diversity to provide a higher diversity gain [12], and diagonally correlated channels, for which dual-polarised channels constitute a highly practical scenario, have higher ergodic capacity than independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) channels [13].…”
