Abstract: Double haemoglobin measurement with HemoCue [fingerstick and venous blood if required] is feasible and allows a significant recovery of blood donations.

“…The errors in the capillary sampling of blood show the extent to which preanalytical errors can influence the results in point-of-care devices. The satisfactory results with venous sampling coupled with the unsatisfactory results with the capillary sampled Hb, supporting other studies,[ 5 7 ] show the difficulty in implementing a satisfactory point of care diagnostic or screening device. Even though the analytical quality of the devices seems to be satisfactory, preanalytical errors seem to be the primary determinants in the determination of quality or lack thereof of HemoCue devices.…”

“…Similar findings were found in a Spanish study, due to which they recommended a two-step strategy for Hb screening with the HemoCue. [ 5 ] Briefly, a two-step strategy entails re-testing of the venous blood if and when the prospective donor fails to have satisfactory Hb by capillary sampled blood. Since the venous sampled Hb by HemoCue is satisfactory for blood bank screening, this can be an ideal strategy in the present scenario.…”

“…22 Greater variation is also found in higher haemoglobin values. 30 As mentioned previously, while the vast majority of anaemic students are likely to be iron deficient, this is not true for all. In addition, some anaemic students were unable to be followed up in our study so the response to treatment was unable to be measured for all.…”

“…Venous sample measured with a hematology analyzer is widely considered the gold standard in Hb measurement, but most POC analyzers are also suited for venous blood analysis, often with results well in accordance with those given by a hematology analyzer [8][9][10][11][12]. Therefore, venous sampling provides a promising means to assess Hb at the donation site in the blood donors whose skinprick Hb result is feared unreliable.…”
