Evaluation of UVB reduction by materials commonly used in reptile husbandry

Abstract: Ultraviolet B (UVB) irradiation (285-320 nm) is considered important for metabolic processes and reproduction in many reptile species by facilitating the synthesis of vitamin D(3). In captivity, UVB radiation reaching an animal may be diminished by the properties of the materials used in enclosure construction. We investigated the UVB-attenuating properties of 14 materials commonly used in cage tops for reptile enclosures. Irradiances were measured by two types of hand-held broadband radiometers and the D(3)-s… Show more

“…In central Europe, chelonians are often kept indoors or under glass or plastic to bridge the often too cold and wet early spring climate conditions right after hibernation. This impacts the availability of UV light as most glass and plastic will reduce the amount of UV light transmitted and many artificial light sources do not provide sufficient UVB-fractions in their spectrum (Burger et al, 2007;Sackey et al, 2015).…”

“…There were a total of 12 cages, 6 infested and 6 non-infested (control). Cages were located in full sun but the aluminum screen blocked approximately 30% of incoming sunlight (Burger et al 2007).…”

“…Active vitamin D3 is needed in calcium metabolism and impacts immune system function and cellular regulation (Baines et al, 2016; Lamberg‐Allardt et al, 2013). Insufficient UV irradiance is linked to chronic stress, immunosuppression, metabolic bone disease, clinical lameness, and death (Adkins et al, 2003; Gardiner et al, 2009; Gillespie et al, 2000; Michael Burger et al, 2007). Too much UV irradiance can result in photo‐kerato‐conjunctivitis, which can result in death (Gardiner et al, 2009; Hibma, 2004).…”
